While all the excitement was around the launch of the Dyson V15 Detect – what with its laser-lit cleaning head and piezo sensor – it's easy to overlook that there's a V12 model as well.

There's no V13 or V14 to fill in the gap, but the V12 Detect Slim, launching alongside the V15 Detect in some markets, slots right in between the existing Dyson V11 range and the very innovative V15 Detect.

We were expecting to hear about a V12 in March – which is in line with when Dyson usually makes its product announcements – but things aren't quite what we would call 'normal', are they? Still, the V12 Detect Slim is expected to bring everything that's great about the V15 Detect, just in a slightly different and more affordable package.

Dyson V12 Detect Slim: price and release date

Dyson vacuum cleaners don’t come cheap, and the new V15 Detect is the priciest of them all. The Dyson V12 brings pretty much the same feature set as the V15 but, according to Dyson, with a little less power and a marginally different design... and a marginally smaller price tag.

There's no information available yet on the V12 Detect Slim launching in other markets, but Dyson has confirmed that two V12 models will be available to buy in Australia starting May 27.

There's the Dyson V12 Detect Slim Total Clean for AU$1,199 and the Dyson V12 Detect Slim Absolute Extra sitting at a higher AU$1,249. That converts to about $935 / £660 – numbers that are far higher than the cost of the base V15 model in the US and UK respectively. Exactly what accounts for a such a high margin is as yet unclear, but even taking into account taxes, we're not expecting the V12 models to go beyond $600 / £600 if announced in the US and UK.

We've asked Dyson to confirm pricing and availability for other markets and will update this article as soon as we know more.

Dyson V12 Detect Slim: what to expect

Dyson has upped the ante with each new range of its cordless vacuums, and that trend hasn't slowed. The V15 Detect is just as remarkable as the Cyclone V10 was when it launched a couple of years ago, and the Dyson V12 Detect Slim is there to just fill in a little gap in the market.

According to Dyson, the V12 Detect Slim comes with the same feature set as the V15 Detect – including the redesigned Fluffy tool and piezo sensor – but with little less suction power as compared to the new flagship.

1. Suction power

Considering Dyson hasn't highlighted specific differences between the V15 and the V12, except for its suction power, we're expecting the latter to be as powerful as at least the V10, if not the V11.

One of the highlight features of the V15 Detect is its dynamically changing suction – the machine is capable of sensing both the kind of floor and the type of dirt to reactively adjust power. It's unclear whether the V12 will also be able to do this, but Dyson has said it's fitted with one of the company's excellent hperdymium motors, so it should be right up there with the likes of the V11.

And considering it's slotting in between the existing V11 and the V15 ranges, we're expecting there to be more than enough suction to tackle practically any job.

2.  Swappable battery

Despite the lower suction power, the Dyson V12 Detect promises the same 60-minute fade-free runtime as the V15 Detect. And, like the V11 (in the US and Australia at least) and V15, you'll be able to buy an additional battery and swap it out if you want to extend the life of a single charge to get more cleaning done.

Whether this 60-minute fade-free promise is with motorized cleaning heads is also yet to be confirmed. Older V-series vacuums has lower battery life than their advertised number when used with motorized attachments like the High Torque cleaning head.

 3. Small dustbin

For those of us who've discovered the Dyson V11 Outsize, we're probably a little spoilt by the large sized bin. Sadly, that's not making its way to the V15 Detect or the V12 Detect Slim. In fact, the canister on the V12 is smaller than the 0.76L bin on the V15, although exact volume has yet to be revealed. On the other side of the spectrum, the Dyson Omni-Glide has a small 0.2L canister, and we're hoping the V12's bin isn't as small as that, but perhaps something in between.

  4. Power button

One point of difference between the V15 Detect and the V12 Detect Slim that Dyson was quick to point out was a new power button (like the one on the new Omni-Glide) instead of the standard trigger.

When we reviewed the Dyson V7 and Dyson V8 handsticks, we did not while it's easy to keep the trigger pressed the entire time you want to run the machine, it can occasionally hurt the wrist. The use a power button instead of a trigger is most welcome in our books, and we wish this option was also available on the flagship V15 Detect.

5. New Laser Slim Fluffy tool

Yes, this brand-new innovation that had us all excited about the V15 Detect is available for the V12 Detect Slim. It's the standard cleaning tool that will ship with the appliance in the box, along with the new Hair Screw Tool that promises to clean up hair and fur of any length without tangling.

The Laser Slim Fluffy will illuminate solid particles (even some microscopic ones) to show you exactly where you need to clean. If you don't see bright green spots on your floor while the laser light is on, then you know you've got a spotless home.
